When we think of abusive relationships or systemic oppression, we often picture overt acts of physical violence or explosive arguments. However, some of the most damaging structures of control are hiding in plain sight. They are sugarcoated as “tradition”, “culture”, or “just how things are”.
Under patriarchal systems, deeply harmful behaviors are routinely normalized. When everyday expectations strip away a person’s autonomy, dignity, and voice, it stops being ordinary. It becomes systemic control.
At Protect Girl Image Organization (@protectagirl), we believe that true empowerment begins with unlearning. Let’s break down the subtle, everyday forms of patriarchal control that we urgently need to name, challenge, and leave behind.
Unpaid Domestic Labor & Weaponized Incompetence
One of the most heavily normalized dynamics in homes and relationships is the division of labor.
- The Norm: Pretending that daily chores, cooking, cleaning, and emotional care are “naturally” a woman’s job, while treating her unpaid labor as a baseline expectation rather than a shared responsibility.
- The Reality: Weaponized incompetence occurs when someone deliberately performs tasks poorly or avoids them entirely so that they won’t be asked to help again. This forces women to shoulder a double burden of professional work and exhaustion at home, systematically devaluing their time and energy.
Control Disguised as “Care” (Surveillance & “Protection”)
Affection should never feel like a prison sentence, yet boundaries are frequently crossed under the banner of romance or guardianship.
- The Norm: Monitoring who a woman talks to, tracking her location constantly, policing her clothing, or dictating her movements under the guise of “caring for her safety”.
- The Reality: This is systemic surveillance. Isolating individuals and stripping away their personal autonomy under the mask of affection creates a dangerous power imbalance. True care fosters freedom and trust; control breeds fear.
Financial Gatekeeping
Economic security is a cornerstone of independence, which is why financial control is one of the most effective ways to trap someone.
- The Norm: Demanding complete control over a partner’s/ dependent’s earnings, hiding financial assets, or forcing a woman to constantly “ask for permission” to spend money she earned.
- The Reality: Financial gatekeeping uses economic power to restrict choices. Making a person financially dependent—and shaming them for needing support—is a severe form of economic abuse.
Hidden Enforcers: When Women and Mothers Police Patriarchy
Perhaps one of the hardest truths to confront is that patriarchy is not sustained by men alone.
- The Norm: Believing that only men uphold patriarchal standards.
- The Reality: Patriarchy is a system of control that can be upheld and enforced by everyone within it—including women and mothers who consciously/unconsciously police other women. Whether it is shaming a younger woman for not marrying early, justifying domestic exploitation as “respect”, or enforcing restrictive dress codes under the guise of “protection”, we must recognize that systemic conditioning affects us all. True liberation means examining every hand that holds the cycle in place.
Naming The Behavior Is the First Step
Healing and societal transformation begin the moment we refuse to call abuse “normal”. By bringing these hidden dynamics into the light, we create space for true equity, mutual respect, and healthy boundaries.
