After a sexual assault, survivors may feel their bodies are not really their own. Survivors often report feelings such as shame, terror, and guilt. Many blame themselves for the assault.
Meet Rose (Not her real name) a 19year old mother, born and raised in Kangai village who has just lost her baby Joe (not his real name). She completed her Primary School education successfully only to later fall prey to early marriage due to lack of Secondary School fees.
Just under 10 per cent of the world’s workers lives with their families on less than $1.90 a day. In the least developed countries, that number rises to 38 per cent of workers.
One of PGIOs biggest passions is borne out of the rampant plight of women facing sexual violence. Rape and sexual assault cases are numerous in the Central Kenya region where our activities are focused.
It’s in Kangai village where we find these three children infested with jiggers on their legs and hands, they had clothes on their bodies only and had not taken a shower for many months. The father was jailed after which their mother abandoned them and eloped with a man who didn’t want anything to do with the kids thus leaving them to fend for themselves.
This past month, the Protect a Girls Image Nairobi team paid a visit to our rescue Centre in Kirinyaga County, Central, Kenya on a mission to assess the progress of the centre’s activities around poor girls support with a place they can call home, provision of their basic needs and education progress.
Information provision: creating an effective communication framework in terms of confidentiality and reliability to the prospective victims or Good Samaritan witnessing or informed of a rape case.
More advocacy is still required in championing issues related to rape that adversely affect the youth.
The prevalence of rape cases within the country is rampant and there is a need to create awareness among the youth, both girls and boys so that they are able to appreciate the reasons for this challenge and how to overcome it as the effects have a devastating impact on the survivors.
